Is Valencia the right city for you?
Valencia is the city that most students discover through recommendation rather than first choice — and consistently leave raving about. It has a beach, good public transport, excellent food (paella was invented here), and a laid-back Mediterranean pace that makes daily life genuinely enjoyable. It's cheaper than Barcelona, has solid Spanish immersion despite Valencian being spoken alongside Spanish, and has a growing international student community without yet being overrun. The main limitation is school choice — only 5 accredited schools compared to 18 in Madrid.
The honest take: Valencia is the underrated pick — beach and sun at significantly lower cost than Barcelona, with better immersion than the coastal tourist cities. The limited school choice is the main constraint. If one of the 5 schools suits your needs, Valencia is hard to argue with.

You need this to open a bank account and sign contracts. Usually obtained at the same appointment as your TIE.

Bring your NIE, passport, and empadronamiento. Wise or Revolut work well as international options while you wait for your NIE.

Book your TIE appointment before you leave home — availability in Spanish cities is limited and slots disappear quickly.
The menú del día (fixed-price lunch, three courses) is how locals eat on weekdays. It typically costs €9–13 and is significantly cheaper than ordering à la carte.
Bring at least two months' rent as savings. Spanish landlords typically ask for one to two months' deposit plus first month's rent upfront.
Your language school can help with local admin guidance — ask them about the process before you arrive. Schools with visa experience will have dealt with this many times.
