Read this first — Abuja does not issue student visas
The Embassy of Spain in Abuja handles diplomatic matters only and issues no student visas. For visa purposes, the Consulate General of Spain in Lagos is the only office ordinarily competent to issue visas for all residents of Nigeria (Abuja/FCT and every state) and the Republic of Benin. Wherever you live in Nigeria, your student-visa file is submitted at the BLS International centre and decided by the Consulate General in Lagos — not at the Abuja Embassy. Do not travel to the Abuja Embassy expecting to lodge a visa application there.

These states and the FCT fall under the Abuja Embassy's consular demarcation (centre and north). It's useful for knowing where you sit — but remember, the demarcation governs services for Spanish nationals. Your student visa is still decided in Lagos.

May 2025 reform — RD 1155/2024
Spain's student visa rules changed on 20 May 2025. Apply at least 2 months before your course start date; your acceptance letter must confirm tuition has been paid in full; your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay and not older than 10 years; for Spanish language courses the school must hold Instituto Cervantes accreditation. Financial means: €600 per month (100% IPREM). Higher-education students can work up to 30 hours per week without a separate permit; language-school students need a separate work authorisation. These national rules are applied by the Lagos consulate.

Submit at BLS International, Lagos
Long-stay student visa applications are lodged in person, by appointment, at the BLS centre in Lagos. Book and check the checklist at nigeria.blsspainvisa.com (status portal: nigeria.blsspainglobal.com). Northern/FCT applicants travel to Lagos to submit.

Pay the visa fee — NGN 153,400
The general student-visa fee for Nigerian nationals is NGN 153,400, plus a separate NGN 28,800 BLS service charge (cash). Different reciprocity rates apply to nationals of Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, the USA and the UK. Confirm the current amount at BLS before your appointment.

Legalize your documents — Nigeria is NOT a Hague country
Nigerian public documents need consular legalization, not an apostille. The standard chain: Nigeria Police Character Certificate (for stays over 180 days) → authentication by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Abuja → legalization by the Spanish Consulate General in Lagos → sworn Spanish translation. The same legalization + translation applies to medical, birth and school certificates.
MOFA sits in Abuja — a practical advantage for northern applicants doing the first authentication step locally before the file goes to Lagos.

Wait for the Lagos decision
The Consulate General in Lagos has a legal period of 1 month to decide from the day after submission (extendable if an interview or extra documents are requested). Once approved, collect the visa within a maximum of 2 months. Don't book non-refundable flights until the visa is in hand.

Nigerian nationals need a visa for Spain
Nigerian passport holders are not visa-exempt for Spain. A Schengen short-stay visa (Category C) is required even for tourist trips under 90 days. For a language or study course over 90 days, you need a national long-stay student visa (Category D). Both are processed through the Lagos consulate and BLS — never issued at Abuja.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which authenticates Nigerian documents as the first step of legalization, is located in Abuja — convenient for northern applicants. But the visa itself is submitted, legalized and decided through Lagos. The Spanish Embassy in Abuja does not receive or process visa applications.
Why does Nigeria need legalization instead of an apostille? +
Nigeria is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is not available. Nigerian public documents for use in Spain must instead be legalized: authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Abuja, then legalized by the Spanish Consulate General in Lagos, then accompanied by a sworn Spanish translation.
